After a lot of thought, we have recently decided to migrate our domain over to obby.wiki as a bit of a fresh start. In the short timespan it took to migrate everything fully (about 2-3 days), we also made additional improvements that you may or may not have noticed.
First of all, we’re like to interrupt announcement because we’ve been seeing a lot of readers and we’d like to ask some of you to consider signing up and contributing. We just launched our biggest purpose-built extension yet that should make getting a valid boilerplate page near effortless! Check it out on any page at the Obby Wiki (log-in required)!
What the migration is
For those of you unfamiliar with our wiki, we recently switched our previous domain obbywiki.com to our new domain obby.wiki. Legacy obbywiki.com links remain active, but should be updated. We also moved from our previous article structure of hosting articles at /wiki/$1 over to our now current structure of simply /$1. Combined with our domain migration, this reduces the character space to share links by 8 entire characters without compromising on the brand or quality of the link or our wiki.
Why the migration
Originally when founding the Obby Wiki, I, Wolfite, initially wanted the obby.wiki domain for the sake that is is simple, easy to remember, and short. However, I couldn’t justify it, because at the time the Obby Wiki was a solo project and I nothing to show for it (yet). So, I eventually settled with the far cheaper obbywiki.com domain and called it a day. Why is it so much cheaper you may ask? That is because the obby.wiki domain is a four character name in the .wiki gTLD registry, meaning it is a premium domain. I just could not justify the cost for an upcoming project.
However, today, the Obby Wiki is much larger. While still small, it has grown a lot since then, and I can now justify the cost of the new domain after seeing the recent growth of the Obby Wiki.
Other benefits
During the migration, we made sure to do some breaking improvement while we had the chance. Now, we have enabled fully strict SSL/TLS mode instead of flexible, which was our previously insecure solution to temporary problems. Flexible was okay when this was a smaller project and we knew every contributor, but now a few have joined over time, we would rather be safe about it. If a new contributor is reading this that we have not spoken to individually, consider updating your password.
FAQ
Will we be able to use the old ObbyWiki.com domain still?
You will still be able to use the old obbywiki.com domain in any links as they are being automatically redirected for the foreseeable future, but we encourage the usage of our new domain in as many links as possible.
Thank you for reading.
